Due to space and time restrictions, entries are limited and will be accepted in the order that they are received on a strictly first-come-first-served basis. The BFS reserves the right to refuse further entries before the deadline once capacity has been reached.  

Events Description

The British Flute Society will be holding three competitions to award talented young performers in 2018. 

  • Closing date for entry: 15 January 2018
  • Competition date: 14 February 2018

BFS School Performer 2018

This competition is open to flute players aged 13 years and under on 31 August 2018. Competitors should play a piece of their own choice and must not exceed 5 minutes. The title of the piece must be submitted upon application.

Competitors may perform on a piccolo, alto or bass flute if they prefer. An official accompanist will be provided with time allotted for a short top-and-tail rehearsal.

Approximate standard for participants is Grade 5.


BFS Young Performer 2018

This competition is open to flute players aged 14-18 years on 31 August 2018. Competitors should play a piece of their own choice and must not exceed 7 minutes. The title of the piece must be submitted upon application.

Competitors may perform on a piccolo, alto or bass flute if they prefer. An official accompanist will be provided with time allotted for a short top-and-tail rehearsal.

Approximate standard for participants is Grade 7–8 or above.


BFS Young Artist 2018

This competition is open to flute players aged competitors aged 19–24 years on 31 August 2018.

This competition is particularly suitable for those studying at a higher level. Competitors should play a piece of their own choice lasting no longer than 8 minutes and the title of the piece must be submitted upon application.

Competitors may perform on a piccolo, alto or bass flute if they prefer. An official accompanist will be provided with time allotted for a short rehearsal. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the class. Written feedback and a certificate of attendance will be given to each competitor.

Approximate standard for participants is Grade 8 or above.
